On August 21, the signing ceremony for the establishment of an overseas office was held between the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Kobe University at the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies, Kobe University.

The ceremony was attended by the following people: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Vice Chancellor Tyvi Small, Vice Provost Gretchen Neisler and LIU Rachel (the director of the Office of Asia Engagement), and Kobe University’s Executive Vice President TAMAKI Hisashi (the director of the Institute for Promoting International Partnerships), UMEYA Kiyoshi (the dean of the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies), TANAKA Junko (professor at the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies and the director of the Americas Division at the Institute for Promoting International Partnerships) and INOUE Hiroki (professor at the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies).

In 2006, the Faculty of Cross-Cultural Studies (now the Faculty of Intercultural Studies) and the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies concluded an agreement of academic cooperation with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and they have maintained a friendly relationship ever since. Since our university concluded the university-wide agreement with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2022, we have exchanged faculty and students in various fields. With the establishment of the overseas office, we are further strengthening our relationship with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The new office at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is our university’s second overseas office on the North American continent. Serving as a hub for the central United States, the new office will promote global education and research activities, primarily led by the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies.
